Wednesday, September 30th, 2015. I had just the best morning ever, kayaking in Kibler Valley with the Dan at 4.1ft
Tuesday, September 29th, 2015. River is making himself at home. We have decided that he reminds us of Kipper, Kipper The Dog.
I drove up to Kibler Valley to document the
flooding. The rain was not particularly heavy in Claudville, but Meadows
of Dan and Woolwine were hit really hard.
Monday, September 28th,2015. After a night at the soccer field, both River and Ben are ready for an early bedtime. Ben played great again, scoring his 2nd goal of the season. Liam also scored, and converted two PKs for us. The team lost 4-6 to go 0-3 on the season.
A few more River photos from today.
Sunday, September 27th, 2015. River and I woke early to fry apples and grill sausage for breakfast before a big day on the water. I ran the Mayo at 3.5 ft with my friend Joe and with fellow Mayberry paddlers Stephen and Devon. We also hucked in and ran the drop on Fall Creek.
Saturday, September 26th, 2015. Amy
found out about two puppies that were found in the woods in the Pipers Gap area.
We went to the vet in the morning to meet them. Amy immediately fell in
love with the male. We had agreed that for us to get a dog, it would need to be
medium to small sized. Just big enough to go camping and hiking with us,
but small enough to stay in the house. So a lot hinged on how big the vet
thought the pup would get. When he said 25lbs, Amy knew that she had
scored her new dog.
We came home, talked about it, then as soon as I gave it the green light, we were headed to Pipers Gap to pick up the latest member of our family, River. Ben loves him, as does our neighbor Joe.
Friday, September 25th, 2015. Our neighbor Joe returned the boys' 4wheeler after logging hundreds of hours on it. That has been the best 4-wheeler ever, lasting for 14 years and through three boys.
Wednesday, September 23rd, 2015. I snapped these photos of little AP before leaving the house one morning. She is a cutie. I took the photos of the chickens Sunday morning, before church, while Amy and I were enjoying a beautiful morning outside in the backyard.
September 19, 2015. Ben played a heck of a soccer game, scoring our only
goal off a long assist from our friend Martin. Martin cleared the ball
past the last row of defenders, who were stationed near midfield. Ben had
to out sprint everyone to the ball, then scored by going to the left side of the
goal. It was hot, the kids were tired, it was our first time being
together as a unit, including practice. In the end, we lost 1-4 in league
play against Shane Mauck's team. It was the first time Shane and I have
coached against each other since the 2010 U8 Fall
Meanwhile, Jackson was in Morganton, NC running in the Freedom Invitational. He knocked almost 3 minutes off his season best and 51 seconds off his time at Freedom last year, finishing in 21:48. His coach said he ran a great race. Earlier in the week Jackson was honored at a high school assembly for finishing his Freshman year with a 4.4 GPA. I am very proud of him.
And after all the soccer and running, we
got to join Joe's amazing birthday nerf war next door. After the kids had
left, we had a neighborhood adults versus kids "capture the flag" battle that
was a blast. I still cannot run due to my sports hernia, but I was able to
help defend our home base. Amy, Susan, Mark and Jackson represented our team
well allowing us to split the games with the kids.
Monday, September, 14th, 2015. After
Ben and I returned home, he went to the soccer field to practice with our
neighbor Jack, as soon as he got home from that, it was time to return to the
field to practice with his RCC team. That was immediately followed by a meeting
with his youth group at church. It was a busy day for the little guy.
Sunday, September 13th, 2015. Ben and I went on our first camping trip with Troop 596 this weekend. It was definitely a different camping experience than the ones Ben was used to as a Cub Scout. As a Boy Scout, the boys have a lot more responsibilities, like putting up their own tents and participating in the cooking of the meals, as well as clean-up. I did not participate in Cub Scouts as a boy, but was very active in Boy Scouts. This weekend's trip reminds me a lot of my days as a scout. Ben had a good time, enjoyed his time with the other scouts and was awarded the Scout badge in a ceremony by the campfire. The troop camped at Rivercamp USA in Piney Creek, NC. That afternoon we paddled a 5 hour stretch of the New River. Ben's whitewater boat was ill-suited for the task and he tired quickly, but other than that, it was a pretty stellar weekend. We even saw a bald eagle while playing at the best rapid on the river. Back at home, Jackson and Amy had a movie night, watching Bernie and The Aviator.
Wednesday, September 9th, 2015. Jackson competed in his 2nd meet of the year on a very hot, muggy day. Deana and Mo came to watch. (times and more photos here)
Tuesday, September 8th, 2015. A few
photos from Front Porch Fest in Stuart, Virginia.
