Wednesday, February 29th, 2012. Had to squeeze in a leap year post. One thing that I failed to acknowledge this month was Jackson's trip to the Middle School's Sweetheart Dance. He met his date Anna, along with other friends, at Cross Creek Country Club for dinner, then attended the dance, where I think he had a great time and finally capped off the evening with friends at Chili's.
Saturday, February 25th, 2012. After practicing for the first time as a team yesterday, Ben and the newly formed 2nd grade Surry Stars AAU team played their first games today against two 3rd grade teams. I missed the first game due to work, but caught the second one. Ben scored one of their four baskets in that game and I thought the kids did pretty good, all things considered. They certainly have a million things to learn about playing ball at this level, but they have a good coach and I think they will fare well by the time next year rolls around if they practice hard and continue to gain experience in tournaments like this one. Jackson was playing in the Pilot Mt tournament as well, only his games were at his school right down the road. So between his morning and afternoon games, he had three of his teammates, Parker, Logan and Hunter over to hang out. And Ben had his teammate and buddy Weston over. They all had a blast goofing off and playing Pro Mini-Hoop. It was a big day, capped off with a night out at the movies with Deana, Izzy and Seth.
Last weekend, we spent Saturday in Stuart, VA at the Prowl's AAU tournament. The air temp was around 60 or 70 degrees all day. The next day, it snowed for the first time this season. We played that evening until dark, then the kids went out the next morning and played until it melted. We were really, really glad that it snowed at least once this year. More photos here.
Thursday, February 16th, 2012. The kids had a half-day at school, but Ben stayed home with a slight fever that started at school yesterday.
Wednesday, February 15th, 2012. In other news, we finally, FINALLY, have curbside recycling. I hope we never take this service for granted, because it took a lot of work by a lot of people to get it started in our little town.
Tuesday, February 14th, 2012. This is what has recently become a
bi-monthly update. We had a fantastic weekend. Ben participated in
our Cub Scout Pack's pinewood derby Friday evening. His car won two of his
eight 4 car heats, but finished 16th out of 29 cars. The new race format
that I really wanted us to try worked out perfectly. More scouts were able
to race more races and running four cars at a time instead of two really made it
more exciting. On Saturday Jackson's RCC Junior Hoops basketball team won
their first round tournament game. Jackson played great, as did his entire
team. He really has really enjoyed his rec team this year. That
evening the boys stayed with Deana and Martin so that Amy and I could celebrate
Valentine's Day. We ate at Pandowdy's on Main Street, then joined friends
at Old North State Winery for music and a few drinks. On Sunday, following
church and Jackson's AAU basketball practice, we watched the new Muppet movie
from the balcony at the downtown cinema.
Ben's basketball season is over, we lost our first round tournament game last week, but Ben played really well. Last night he and I shot ball during Jackson's rec practice. The kid is going to be a heck of a ball player. Today, Ben read in front of his school during an assembly about the American flag. We have no plans tonight, other than Jackson shooting ball at the gym after school, but for the rest of the week for Jackson will be Wed - AAU practice, Thurs - RCC tournament game, Fri - school dance, Sat - AAU tournament. He is a busy, athletic and very smart kid (all As again on his progress report last week). Jackson joined his aunt Deana yesterday in Winston-Salem to buy new clothes for Friday night's Valentine's Dance at the middle-school. Jackson will be joining his date and a few other couples for dinner at the country club prior to the dance.
